THE ISLAND OF AEGINA
 
In the middle of the Saronic Gulf, sixteen and half nautical miles from the port of Piraeus, in the light blue waters of myth and history lies Aegina, the first capital of Greece.

It is the ideal place for relaxation and spiritual uplifting, a place of artistic inspiration and concentration, but also a place where historic memory is alive in every step you make.


You arrive at Aegina town by ferry from Piraeus, as you enter the harbour that is buzzing with life the small white picturesque chapel of St. Nicholas welcomes you from the jetty on the water front. The harbour front is lined with fish taverns and confectioners, souvenir shops and banks. Behind this colourful front lies a maze of criss cross alleys, picturesque shops, Grocers,
Boutiques, Jewellers to mention just a few. Four main routes connect the town of Aegina with almost all of the areas of the island that one may visit by Bus, Taxi, Motorcycle and car.


You leave Aegina and follow the northern coast road to Souvala with its breathtaking views blue waters and the aroma of pine trees. You pass through Plakakia noticed only by the copper statue of the Greek mother that welcomes the visitor with inner calming.



Souvala is Aegina`s second port although very different, it has a charm all of its own the inhabitants are mainly engaged in the tourist trade, fishery and strike a beautiful balance between the two. Souvala has one of the best known mineral springs in Europe and is recommended for curing stomach disorders, rheumatism, skin and gynaecological ailments.


East of Souvala Agioi a resort with a scattering of houses built on farm land with panoramic views of Piraeus and Salamina. Carry on the north eastern coast and you come to Vagia a quiet quaint fishing harbour With a small sandy beach and Nicho`s taverna selling the fruits of the sea.





At the north eastern tip of the island high up in the pine clad hills lies the temple of Aphaea with panoramic views of the sea and one of the oldest temples in Greece. Following the coast road down to Agia Marina the main tourist attraction of the island. In the twentieth century Agia Marina was a deserted sea side resort with vineyards, olive groves and a few rural houses.


Today it is a busy port and a much frequented venue with tour operators and Athenians alike it offers hotel rooms for rent, restaurants, bars and nightclubs not forgetting Pita Tom souvlaki takeaway. A long sandy beach embraces the bay with safe shallow waters ideal for families.





Heading out of Agia Marina on the main inland road through picturesque hillsides you come to Xantos where you cannot help yourself but to stop and view the newly built large church and the old renowned monastery of AGIOS NECTARIOS. It is visited by travellers from all over the world as a place of religious pilgrimage to worship and begging his meditation for their physical health and spiritual deliverance.


Arriving back in Aegina town head out on the south west coast road to Marathonas it is Aegina`s biggest bay approximately two miles wide. The areas attractive sandy beaches and crystal blue waters have turned it into a bustling cosmopolitan resort visited mainly in the summer.





Moving on you come to Perdika a wonderful fishing village built on a natural harbour protected by the wind in the south west tip of the island.
It is full of traditional character with its fine dry climate array of superb restaurants and at the same time functioning as cosmopolitan resort.
